UTBox is committed to acting as a community minded provider for broadcasting clients and internet fax users. As a result of customer feedback we identified the need for fax users to be able to opt-out of materials they did not deem relevant to them.

There was previously an Australian government discussion paper which discussed extending the spam act to cover facsimile transmissions which UTBox was invited to.

However the end result was that fax was not extended to be covered by the spam act. Even if it is not required by legislation to provide an opt out facility we believe that there is a strong argument that suggests it is in the best interest of the marketer to provide clear and easy automated opt out options on their fax broadcasts.

The key benefits of doing so include:

• Automatic opt outs mean the recipient can remove themselves via a system rather then contacting the company that is advertising (often in quite an unfriendly manner!)
• If the fax broadcaster sends another broadcast at a later date they can block people that have un-subscribed automatically which will
• Reduce the cost of their campaign
• Increase the conversion rate per fax sent
• Not irritate people who have specifically said they are not interested in the product they are selling
• Decrease the likelihood of government having to extend heavy handed legislation with high costs of compliance on to the marketers due to responsible self regulation.

To make it easier for those marketers who wish to utilise an online fax broadcast opt-out mechanism we have introduced dontfax.me. dontfax.me is a website where receivers of un-wanted faxes can register their wish to opt-out. The number is recorded against the UTBox users campaign code and can be utilised as a block list by the marketer.

Currently dontfax.me is available to select customers as a beta trial and will be introduced to all customers in 2009.
